Brilliant piece about water – and alarming.

The checking account / savings account distinction you drew here is one of the clearest explanations I have read of why the language shift from crisis to bankruptcy matters. Crisis implies you can go back. Bankruptcy means the baseline is gone.

I am writing from KAUST in Saudi Arabia, where 70% of drinking water is desalinated and the energy cost per cubic meter is 25 times higher than conventional surface water treatment. The people here do not feel the cost because the bill is subsidized, which is exactly the governance failure Madani is describing at scale.

Published a piece today on this for Aziul Connections if it is relevant to your readers.
